More Than Time, It’s Relationship.

John 3;16 MSG - This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.

More Than Time, It’s Relationship.

When we think about eternal life, our minds often drift toward the concept of living forever, just endless years stretching into infinity. But Jesus gave a very different definition, one that might surprise us with its simplicity and depth.

In a moment of intimate prayer recorded in John 17:3, Jesus says, “This is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” Notice what He doesn’t say. He doesn’t focus on the duration of eternity, but on the essence of it, which is knowing God.

This shifts everything. Eternal life, in Jesus’ own words, is not primarily about time but about relationship. It’s not some distant reward reserved for the afterlife; it’s a living connection that begins the moment we truly encounter God. Eternal life starts now in the present, not some far-off someday. It’s not just about how long we live, but how deeply we live. It’s a quality of life, not merely a quantity of years.

Knowing God isn’t a cold, theological concept. It’s not about facts or formulas. It’s personal, intimate, and life-altering. As the apostle John later writes, “God is love,” and to remain in love is to remain in God (1 John 4:16). To genuinely know God is to step into a relationship with perfect love, a love that reshapes us from the inside out.

This kind of knowing goes beyond intellect. It’s experiential. It’s like standing under a waterfall; there’s no way to remain untouched by water. You can’t face the sun without feeling its warmth. And you can’t walk closely with God without being marked by His love.

The more we draw near to Him, the more we begin to reflect who He is. Love becomes more than a feeling; it becomes our posture toward the world, how we speak, how we forgive, how we serve. Eternal life, then, is not a future hope alone. It’s a present reality, unfolding as we walk daily in relationship with the One who is love itself.

To know God is to begin truly living right now. And that’s what makes life eternal. Not just unending, but unshakably rooted in love.
