My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
There is an almost imperceptible difference between hope and faith. In the Bible, Hebrews 11:1, Paul uses hope to define faith. This song is an expression of faith and trust in Jesus Christ because He is both our Creator and Redeemer. KJV Colossians 1:4-17. He has purchased us by His blood and He covers us with His righteousness. Our faith, hope and trust must have their foundation in Jesus christ who is the firm foundation “For no other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus christ.” KJV 1 Corinthians 3:11. As it is written, “Blessed is the man that trust trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is.” KJV Jeremiah 17:7.
When darkness seems to veil His face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.
Along the Christian walk, we often tend to despair and doubt our acceptance with God mostly because of our sins. The devil always casts darkness around us to make certain our fall, especially in the hour of temptation, but if only we would rest and cling wholly onto God’s unchanging grace. Knowing this, that we have a High Priest, Jesus Christ who is in the Most Holy place of the heavenly sanctuary, we have nothing to fear “For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:” KJV Hebrews 9:24. Let us enter within the veil and there behold the beautiful Jesus. Hebrews 6:19. He alone can forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all our unrighteousness.
When He shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in Him be found;
Clad in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
In a letter 6b dated 1890, Ellen White has this profound statement, “Christ, only Christ and His righteousness, will obtain for us a passport into heaven.” Christ and His righteousness this is our message, our doctrine, our song and our hope. Christ is coming soon, when He comes, the only thing that will make us stand is the passport described above. Notice the words of the hymn writer, “Clad in His righteousness alone”. It is christ who dresses us and we are not to add or mingle the fine linen with any clothes of our own devising for our clothes are filthy rags and filthy righteousness. Read Isaiah 64:6. Question for you, have you obtained the passport into heaven? If you have not, as you share in the words of the chorus of this song, it’s a prayer that you choose to stand on no other ground but that of Jesus Christ.
On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
